Republican strategist Steve Schmidt hammered Vice President Mike Pence’s repeated false claims about the Trump campaign’s dealings with Russia on Tuesday’s edition of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Host Joe Scarborough played a clip of Pence on Fox News denying claims that the campaign was “in cahoots” with Wikileaks.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Pence told “Fox & Friends” despite the fact that Donald Trump Jr. was actively communicating with Wikileaks and told all of the top advisors about his contact.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Scarborough mocked. “Except the truth.”
Co-host Mika Brzezinski noted that Pence has been asked numerous times about the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian agents, and every denial he has made was later proven wrong.
“At what point is it un-American when you’re asked questions and questions and questions about something obviously curious that’s going on that pertains to Russian meddling, and you are willfully clueless?” Brzezinski said.
Schmidt said that it’s incomprehensible Pence has been able to dodge scrutiny for his role in the administration.
“We don’t talk enough about the vice president’s nonstop lying,” Schmidt said.
Pence is either lying, Brezizinski said, or “willfully stupid” to believe the Trump team’s denials.
“Let’s say you get asked one of those questions on one of those instances, wouldn’t you pick up the phone and say what’s going on?” Brzezinski said. “Wouldn’t you care as an American who loves this country to say is this happening?”
Schmidt agreed that Pence has proven himself to be a liar and a fraud.
“I think that over these months the vice president’s exposed himself as a titanic fraud,” Schmidt said. “When it comes to consensual relationships between gay Americans, he’s never tongue-tied on that. We don’t hear from him on Roy Moore. We don’t hear from him.”
He went on to slam the Trump administration for lying about their involvement with Russia at every single turn.
“The truth of the matter is, and I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, 100 percent of the time, 100 percent of the people around this administration, when asked a question about Russia, the Russian involvement in this election, they lie about it,” Schmidt said. “Not 99 percent of the time, not 99.9 percent of the time — 100 percent of the time.”
Panelist Mike Barnacle agreed, adding that Americans’ “eyes are glazed over” from this “everyday tsunami of rituals out of politics. Of the pedophile running in Alabama. Of Wikileaks, a sworn enemy of the United States. Julian Assange, a sworn enemy of the United States. The collusion with the Trump campaign for the presidency. The Justice Department being perverted. Every day there’s something new. And every day someone in the media will write about the ‘new normal’ we have to deal with. This is not normal.”
Julia Ioffe, who broke the Trump Jr. story, added that this is how “Trump won in 2016.”
“You flood the zone with enough stuff where people just get exhausted at being outraged and shocked that the real serious stuff just kind of slides right under it,” she explained. “What’s interesting about what’s happening with Russiagate, as bad as it is for the Trump administration, it’s also perfect cover to pack the courts, to dismantle the EPA, to do all kinds of crazy things with the Justice Department.”
