WATCH: Rick Santorum Caught in Massive Obamacare Lie, Gets Schooled by Ex-Obama Adviser

Former Obama administration adviser Dr. Zeke Emanuel schooled former Sen. Rick Santorum as he tried to insist that President Trump’s executive orders aimed at sabotaging Obamacare will improve access to healthcare.

In an appearance on CNN’s “New Day” Monday, Santorum argued that Trump’s executive order to kill cost-sharing subsidies to Obamacare recipients was a “good move” because it will “light a fire” under Congress to get “premiums down.”

Emanuel called out the move as Trump trying to “undermine health insurance,” adding that the elderly and those with preexisting conditions will see their premiums go up “20 percent” as a result of the order.

“This is just fake news that this is going to make premiums better,” Emanuel said, after explaining the only people who will benefit are younger, healthier people who make over $100,000 per year. “Most people will not benefit.”

Santorum agreed that the order itself “is not going to make premiums lower.”

“Alright,” Emanuel exclaimed. “So we’ve just unmasked the president’s false justification!”

Santorum argued that Trump was merely trying to get Congress to act, to which Emanuel pointed out that not one Republican proposal that has been scored would actually lower premiums.

“We’ve been waiting seven years for a Republican proposal that will lower premiums,” Emanuel said. “There’s not been one.”

Santorum said that the key Republican point is that improving access will result in more competition and lower premiums.

“This is false news!” Emanuel interrupted. “There was not a single county without health insurance [available on the Obamacare marketplace] but now with these cost-sharing subsidies [being cut] there will be many counties without an insurance plan. That’s not competition, that is anti-competition.”

“You can’t blame Donald Trump for the failure of Obamacare,” Santorum insisted. “This thing’s been in a death spiral for a few years.”

“False!” Emanuel fired back, pointing out that analysts have found the exchanges to be in strong shape though certain rural areas don’t have enough consumers to create a large network.

“If you want to actually get premiums down, keep the exchanges healthy,” he explained. “What you do is you pass the cost-sharing subsidies. You have reinsurance in case excess sick people come in. You heavily advertise. You increase the length of open enrollment, and you target young and healthy people to encourage them to get insurance and indicate to them how cheap the insurance is for them with subsidies. Those will shore up the exchanges.”

Santorum insisted that Obama’s attempts to do just that “failed miserably” and “drive people out of the marketplace.”

“It is a disaster,” Santorum claimed. “And Donald Trump is trying to fix it.”

“No, because his policies are actually undermining the exchange, and he’s not going to lower premiums!” Emanuel shot back. “I would like us to come back and see in 2018 if premiums go down or up 20 percent. If they go up 20 percent Rick Santorum has to eat his words.”

“Done,” Santorum said.
