Last month, Republicans in Congress finally took action against Russia to punish them for openly meddling in the 2016 presidential election through a series of cyber attacks. Congress passed a wide sweeping range of sanctions against Russia, which Trump was forced to sign against his will due to the current political climate pending the ongoing investigation into his 2016 campaign.
As a result, Putin struck back by ejecting over 750 American state officials from Russia, severing a wide array of diplomatic ties.
Trump, who claims to be an expert negotiator who refuses to let the United States “lose”, has remained silent despite the fact that this is a huge slap in the face to the State Department.
Apparently, when Trump says he’s going to be hard on other countries, he only means those he isn’t in cahoots with.
On Thursday, however, Trump finally broke his silence on this issue, and made the following statement:
“I want to thank him because we’re trying to cut down our payroll and as far as I’m concerned I’m very thankful that he let go of a large number of people because now we have a smaller payroll… There’s no real reason for them to go back. I greatly appreciate the fact that we’ve been able to cut our payroll of the United States. We’re going to save a lot of money.”
That’s right: Trump just thanked Putin for insulting the United States and expelling US diplomats from Russia. It’s long been suspected that Putin has the ability to blackmail Trump, and this certainly makes that seem more likely. After all, there’d be no reason for Trump to issue such a statement if he wasn’t absolutely terrified of Putin, as the State Department has a huge budget and this move by Putin doesn’t even put a tiny dent in the total federal payroll.
Clearly, Trump is incapable of negotiating with Russia. This latest statement shows that he refuses to confront Putin on anything, even if it directly involves an insult to the United States and a threat to our diplomatic interests abroad.
This, combined with his recent inability to handle negotiations with North Korea without having an improvised meltdown at a rally. This goes beyond party politics; it’s time to get this man out of office for the sake of national security.
