President Donald Trump is calling on the Department of Justice, referring to it as the “deep state,” to begin jailing what he believes to be his enemies.
Trump reacted to a Fox News report citing a story from the right-wing news site Daily Caller, saying that Hillary Clinton aide Human Abedin “forwarded sensitive State Department emails, including passwords to government systems, to her personal Yahoo email account.”
The email provider was later hacked, which The Daily Caller claims “guarantees” that Abedin exposed secret government information to a “state-sponsored actor.”
Trump reacted with an unhinged gem on Twitter, calling for Abedin, former FBI Director James Comey, and “others” to be locked up.
“Crooked Hillary Clinton’s top aid [sic], Huma Abedin, has been accused of disregarding basic security protocols,” he tweeted. “She put Classified Passwords into the hands of foreign agents. Remember sailors pictures on submarine? Jail! Deep State Justice Dept must finally act? Also on Comey & others.”

The emails were released in response to a Freedom of Information Act, revealing that Abedin forwarded State Department emails to a personal account. While Trump is demanding that the Department of Justice “finally act,” these emails were obtained by the FBI last year during their extensive investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email use while Secretary of State.
All of the attacks he has lobbed at Clinton in the more than a year since winning the election have been centered on things that were already investigated or reviewed. Now, he’s just demanding “jail” for his opponents, trial or not.
Trump has also accused Comey of leaking sensitive information when he revealed that Trump pressured him to stop the investigation into disgraced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who has since pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
Trump also called the Justice Department the “deep state,” alluding to a conspiracy theory that there are career officials deep within the intelligence and law enforcement community conspiring against the president. The DOJ is run by Trump appointees Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein.
Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, said Trump’s rhetoric was reminiscent of a foreign dictator or a middle schooler.
Calling on the law enforcement apparatus of the government you lead to investigate your political rivals is for the likes of Erdogan & Duterte, not America’s President. Calling DOJ names—well, that’s for middle schoolers and AM talk radio hosts.

All the more ironic is that Trump himself was revealed to have given highly classified information to top Russian officials during an Oval Office meeting, horrifying our foreign allies.
The Washington Post reported in May that Trump revealed “highly classified information” to Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and former Russian ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak.
US officials told The Post that Trump’s disclosure of information provided by Israeli officials as part of an intel-sharing cooperation agreement “jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State.”
“This is code-word information,” a US official told The Post, adding that Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”
