Earlier today, Donald Trump announced that the many branches of the American military would no longer be allowing transgender individuals to serve. This seemed like a policy that would make more sense in the 1950’s than in 2017, and shocked many Americans due to its discriminatory and highly regressive nature. As a country, many Americans believed that the United States was past the point where it would arbitrarily ban groups of individuals from serving their country.
Trump’s reasoning behind the ban was laughable. He stated that allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military would somehow force the armed services to pay large “costs”, without detailing these costs or providing any evidence that they exist. Like many of Trump’s policies, this one has no basis in fact or evidence. Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords due to lies and half truths, has invented fake terrorist attacks to inspire fear both at home and abroad, and now, is enacting a wide-sweeping ban based on nothing but prejudice and hate.
Many of Trump‘s supporters will likely be thrilled. This was, after all, a purely political move, as banning transgender individuals from serving in the military won’t provide any tangible benefits to society or to the efficacy of America’s fighting forces around the world. Instead, Trump is playing with the lives of transgender Americans, limiting their rights in order to appeal to his prejudiced and uninformed base.
One transgender Navy Seal, however, isn’t going to let that fly. “Let’s meet face to face and you tell me I’m not worthy,” said Kristin Beck, a 20-year veteran of the Navy SEALs, calling out Trump. “Transgender doesn’t matter. Do your service.” Beck’s words carry a lot of weight, as the Navy’s SEAL division is one of America’s most deadly and versatile fighting forces, and members go through one of the most intense and exhaustive training programs in the world.
In addition to going through SEAL training, Beck served for 20 years, and was even deployed as part of SEAL Team 6, which became famous for taking out Osama Bin Laden. If Beck can do all of this, then it’s pretty clear that by banning transgender soldiers, Donald Trump is eschewing some of the most talented and impressive Americans in the country.
If you agree that this ban shouldn’t be allowed to move forward due to its offensive and ineffective nature, please like and share this message in order to show your support for the transgender community in America.
