A new poll found that President Donald Trump’s poll numbers are the lowest of any president in the history of modern polling.
Trump, who was the least popular candidate to ever win the presidential election, has actually seen his numbers go even lower nearly a year since that fateful Election Day, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
“A majority of Americans say President Trump has not accomplished much during his first nine months in office and they have delivered a report card that is far harsher even than the tepid expectations they set for his tenure when he was sworn into office,” The Post reports.
Trump’s approval rating is “demonstrably lower than any previous chief executive at this point in his presidency over seven decades of polling.” Just 37 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the presidency. Nearly 60 percent say they disapprove, with 50 percent saying they strongly disapprove. Both are the worst numbers of his presidency.
By comparison, Obama had a 57 percent approval at this point of his presidency, Bill Clinton was at 52 percent, George H.W. Bush was at 76 percent, Ronald Reagan was at 59 percent, and George W. Bush, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, was at a whopping 89 percent.
Just 35 percent of Americans say he has accomplished a good amount while in office, down from 42 percent after his first 100 days. Around 65 percent say he has accomplished “not much” or “little or nothing.”
More than 55 percent of Americans said Trump is not keeping his campaign promises, up from 41 percent this spring.
His numbers on his core issues show he has not lived up to his own hype. When he took office in January, 61 percent said he would do a good job with the economy. Now, just 44 percent think he’s actually done well. More than 55 percent trusted him to deal with terrorism, now just 43 percent of Americans do. A mere 28 percent think he’s doing a good job of handling race relations. Just 26 percent think he will improve the healthcare system.
After touting himself as an expert dealmaker on the campaign trail, the public is not buying it. Nearly 60 percent say Trump is not good at making political deals. A whopping 66 percent say he is not honest or trustworthy.
The Washington Post-ABC News poll is just one of a number of surveys showing the same thing. An NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll found that Trump’s numbers are at an all-time low. New polls from CNN and even Fox News found the same results.
Trump, meanwhile, said that he “just got fantastic poll numbers” in an interview with The New York Times last week, but declined to offer any evidence.
MSNBC’s Steve Benen points out that it’s rare for a president to have such low numbers when the economy is doing well.
Benen explains that’s “what makes Trump’s woeful public support so striking: the nation has low unemployment and healthy economic growth, but the American mainstream is rejecting the president in surprisingly strong numbers anyway.”
“The data therefore appears to reflect a public rejection of Trump personally – Americans aren’t satisfied with him, his character, his capacity for honesty, his style of leadership,” he explained. “And so long as the president believes he’s seeing ‘fantastic poll numbers,’ Trump won’t see any reason to even try to change.”
